All eight Nolan County high school varsity basketball teams start the 2011 portion of their seasons today, although a few of them have only been idle for a few days.
In non-district action, the Sweetwater boys and girls go to Roby while both Roscoe teams will travel at Eula for their final pre-district tuneups.
The Highland boys and girls will play their first District 11-A, Division II doubleheader when they bus to Loraine, and Blackwell’s boys and girls have a District 12-A, Division II doubleheader at Paint Rock.
Highland’s boys will be hoping for much better results after starting district with a 76-15 loss to state-ranked Ira this past Friday, while the Roscoe and Highland girls are coming off second-place finishes at their respective holiday tournaments last week.
Both Blackwell teams have been idle since their last district games on Dec. 20 when they played host to Robert Lee. But Sweetwater’s boys and girls went to Colorado City this past Friday, with the girls winning 45-18 and the boys losing 52-32.
Taylor McKoy (13 points) and Alicia Finn (11) paced the Lady Mustangs, who improved to 14-9 overall.
For the Mustangs (5-12), Paxton Kelley had 11 points and B.J. Walker added eight against Colorado City.Sweetwater also lost all three games at Lubbock’s Caprock tournament with defeats against Lamesa (38-71), New Deal (51-70) and Perryton (32-71). Kelley scored 23 against New Deal and Taylor Jones had eight against Perryton.
Also this past Friday, the JV girls defeated Colorado City 30-26 and the JV boys lost 35-30.
