ROBY — The Sweetwater girls basketball team is star-ting out 2011 the way it finished in 2010.
And the Lady Mustangs’ 42-30 win on Tuesday at Roby came against a peren-nial state power.
Sweetwater (15-9) trailed only once — at 7-6 — against the Lady Lions, who came into the contest ranked No. 6 in Class 1A, Division II.
Tuesday’s victory was the ninth in the last 10 games for Sweetwater, which goes to Mineral Wells Friday before tipping off District 5-3A play next week at home against Snyder.
After a slow start that produced a 4-4 tie after one period, Sweetwater warmed up behind Taylor McKoy, who had nine of her game-high 17 points in the second quarter to help the Lady Mustangs take a five-point lead (16-11) at halftime.
Sweetwater still led by five, 25-20, at the end of three quarters, then went on an 8-2 run to open its biggest lead, 33-22, midway through the fourth. Roby hit three straight baskets to cut it to 33-28, but could get no closer as the Lady Mustangs regained their composure and finished the game with a 9-2 flourish.
Though no Sweetwater player other than McKoy reached double figures, several of them had key contributions. Kinsey Browning scored eight points and sophomore Kendra Crosson had seven, with six coming in the final 2:41 to help Sweetwater nail down the victory. Alicia Finn and Suede Shirley each had three points and Aubra Hendrix and Candice Her-nandez scored two.
