In a hard-fought district opener that was tied at the end of both the first and third quarters, the Sweetwater freshman boys outscored Wylie 9-6 in the final eight minutes Friday to pull out a 38-35 victory at Wylie’s gym.
Kaleb Hoover’s 20 points paced Sweetwater, which has lost just once in 15 games this season.
The teams were tied at 10 at the end of the opening period and Wylie led 20-19 at halftime. It was 29-29 going into the fourth and final stanza. Tre Taylor scored eight points and Dylan Bennett and Quentin Wetsel each had four, while Marquees Jenkins had two.
Sweetwater’s JV boys team led Wylie in the early part of its contest, but ended up losing 69-9 to the hosts in its district opener.
Kyle McSherry had seven points for Sweetwater, which is 10-9 overall, while Ryan Linebaugh had two.
Wylie ran off 20 straight points to take a 22-5 lead after one quarter and it got worse from there, as Sweet-water managed just four points the rest of the way.
