More national attention is coming to the Hailey Dunn case with the addition of a new agency as the search continues.
Representatives from the Laura Recovery Center for Missing Children are now in Colorado City to assist local investigators, other law enforcement agencies and the recently added KlaasKids Foundation in the search for the thirteen-year-old teenager.
Hailey Dunn has been missing since December 28th, when her mother, Billie Jean Dunn, reported her missing. Dunn's former boyfriend, Shawn Adkins, last saw Hailey a day earlier on the 27th at her house. Adkins was declared as a suspect late last week and has been under 24-hour surveillance by law enforcement.
The Laura Recovery Center for Missing Children was founded in 1998 in memory of Laura Smither, a twelve-year-old who was abducted and murdered in 1997.
Located in Friendswood, a small town outside of Houston, the non-profit organization "focuses on education, search, and prevention in the area of missing children." A statement in an email from the organization also states that the Laura Recovery Center has also offered free abduction prevention programs, worked with families of missing loved ones, and organized nationwide searches for abducted children.
Both national agencies have asked for the help of volunteers. On Wednesday morning, registered volunteers--those over 18 years of age with a photo ID--would meet at the Colorado City Civic Center. They would be grouped and taught by the agencies various search tactics. Volunteers would also be given specific areas to search, orange marking flags and even a GPS so that they can be tracked. The searches would be in coordination with efforts from law enforcement.
Also reported on Tuesday by Colorado City city manager Pete Kampfer was the announcement of hiring two new police officers. The additional manpower would help in keeping up with the efforts of the criminal and missing person investigation. Currently, Colorado City police employs six officers, including the interim chief. The officers would be hired into permanent positions.
Anyone with information on Hailey's whereabouts are asked to contact the Colorado City Police Department at 325-728-5294 or 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678). Hailey stands at 5'1" and weighs 120 pounds. She has hazel eyes and brown hair with blondish streaks.
