Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital is offering a free diabetic support group meeting on Feb. 1, 2011 at the hospital’s Emergency Department Classroom (200 E. Arizona Ave.). Beginning at 2 p.m., the hour-long program will focus on appropriate exercise routines for individuals with diabetes.
“Proper and adequate exercise is just one of the critical components in managing diabetes,” said Rosa Best, chief nursing officer at Rolling Plains Memorial. “In addition to supporting your body’s efficient use of insulin, exercise also contributes to your overall health.”
Diabetes mellitus, typically referred to as diabetes, affects one in 10 adults in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the nation.
“There are 20.8 million Americans living with diabetes,” said Best. “Nearly one third of them are unaware they have the disease and we want to lower that number.”
For more than 10 years, the hospital has supported the Diabetic Outreach Program. A free service to the community, the program offers diabetic education, support groups, dietary consults and a variety of resources that help affected individuals and their loved ones live with or prevent the disease.
“Diabetes is being diagnosed in more and more Americans each year,” said Best. “The RPMH Diabetic Outreach Program exists to increase awareness about the disease by offering free education and support to everyone in our community.”
The support group meeting on Feb. 1 will feature guest speaker Wes Stafford who specializes in sports health and is the director of cardiac rehabilitation at Rolling Plains Memorial. Stafford will lead exercise routines and will tailor techniques to your age and activity level. Attendees are encouraged to wear comfortable active attire.
This event is free of charge and does not require membership. It is ideal for those with or those looking to learn more about the disease. Support staff will be on-site to answer questions in the group or individually.
If you would like more information about diabetes, or if you think you might be at risk, please contact the RPMH Diabetic Outreach Program at 325-235-1701.
