The first month of the new year is nearly over. That means the high school basket-ball playoffs are getting close, and over the next few weeks the postseason berths in each of the state’s districts will be decided.
While Sweetwater’s teams are off tonight, the other six Nolan County varsity squads will see action and three of them are still very much in the playoff hunt. In District 9-A, Division I, Roscoe’s teams have a doubleheader at Haskell while in District 11-A, Division II, Highland’s teams host Loraine and in District 12-A, Division II, Blackwell’s teams will host Paint Rock.
The Roscoe boys (3-2) can tie for second place in District 9-A, Division I by defeating Haskell, which is 4-1. Stamford is the district leader at 5-0. Haskell won the teams’ first meeting, 37-36, at Roscoe. The Roscoe girls (1-5) must beat Haskell (2-4) to keep their slim postseason hopes alive.
In District 11-A, Division II, the Highland girls (7-2) — seeking a 10th straight playoff berth — can take a giant step to that goal by beating Loraine (6-2). A win would give the second-place Lady Hornets a 1 1/2-game lead over Loraine and at least a two-game lead over Ira (5-4) with two games left, and Highland would own the tiebreaker since it had defeated both teams in district play.
If the Highland boys (2-5) defeat Loraine (3-4) today and Hermleigh and Trent both lose their contests, the Hornets will create a tie for third with Hermleigh and Loraine in District 11-A, Division II.
