BROWNWOOD — The Brownwood Lions dominated the first and third quarters so much in Tuesday’s 51-23 win over Sweetwater that they could afford to rest their starters and play their subs in the other two periods.
The victory — which improved the Lions to 3-3 in District 5-3A — came almost entirely on the strength of a 16-minute stretch where Brownwood outscored Sweetwater 47-9.
Brownwood, which never trailed, used an early 14-0 run to take a 23-7 lead at the end of one quarter before sitting its starters down and scoring just two points the rest of the half. The Lions still led 25-13, then went on another tear in the third quarter as they outscored Sweetwater 24-2 after putting their starters back in.
That gave Brownwood a 49-15 advantage, allowing the Lions to put the subs back in the rest of the way as they coasted to an easy win. Brownwood, which needs one more win to clinch a playoff berth, was led by Greg Jefferson with 20 points and Marquos Barnes with 12.
Sweetwater (0-7), which has one game left, scored its fewest points of the season. Paxton Kelley and Dylon Adames had seven points, Ryan Linebaugh four, Taylor Jones and Gabe Medellin two and Kevin Sepeda one.
