The Highland girls basketball team has had three different head coaches in the past three years. But the program continues to be one of the most successful in West Texas at any level.
Highland (19-11), which was the District 11-A, Division II runnerup this season with a 10-2 record, is about to make its 10th consecutive playoff appearance. The Lady Hornets will take on Robert Lee (19-10), the third-place team from District 12-A, Division II, in a bi-district matchup at 7 p.m. today in Bronte.
The teams appear evenly-matched after having split in their two regular season meetings. Robert Lee won 32-31 at Robert Lee back on Nov. 16, but Highland came back to beat the Lady Steers 52-44 in early December in the semifinals of Highland’s annual Hilltop Classic.
Ryan Dollar, Highland’s first-year head coach, said he is expecting a good contest this evening. With a win, Highland — which lost in the area playoff round this past season — advances to the area round again to face Wink, which has a first-round bye.
Highland’s top two scor-ers this season have been 6-2 senior post Callie San-dusky (14.3) and 5-2 junior guard Kara Hughey (11.2). Sandusky also leads the team in rebounds (9.2) and has 163 blocks.
The other starters are 5-10 freshman post Sierra Allen (8.7), 5-5 senior guard Shyan Womack (5.5) and 5-6 junior guard Jessica McCain (4.6), while the top reserves are 5-10 freshman guard Beth Richburg (4.0) and 5-5 sophomore guard Lora Stewart (1.9). Sand-usky, Hughey and McCain are returning starters from last season’s squad, which had a 19-8 record.
