McKinney — Oneda “Aunt Dodo” Thompson, 98, died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011, in a McKinney hospital. Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, at Rose Hill Cemetery in Merkel with Reverend Jimmy Griffith officiating, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel.
Oneda was born Sept. 12, 1912, the first child of James and Etta (Shouse) McWilliams at Shep in Nolan County. She married E.R. “Shorty” Thompson June 18, 1938. He preceded her in death May 23, 1997.
The good Lord provided the McWilliams and Thompson families with a guardian angel by giving us Aunt Dodo. She helped many members of the family in so many ways. Dodo loved to draw, crochet, and cook. She worked for a five and dime store in Houston when her husband served in the Army. Once they moved to Big Spring and Shorty began his own car repair company, Dodo served in several capacities at church, sold clothing at home parties for which she won an award, and was a babysitter. She began to study accounting and became the accountant for Shorty’s company.
Over the years, she met many people. Everyone liked her and wanted to make a connection even when she was in her 90s.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews that loved her and felt that Aunt Dodo was a very important and special part of their family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two sisters; and six brothers.
