Sweetwater Middle School competed in the TMSCA (Texas Math and Science Coaches Association) held at Lincoln Junior High in San Angelo on Saturday, March 5. Four students from Sweetwater Middle School qualified for the state competition to be held in San Antonio, Texas on April 9. Eathan Speer, an eighth grader, placed third in the eighth grade science and qualified for the state competition with a score of 152, outscoring 42 students. Cody Chapman and Chance Adams tied for fourth place and Leah Warren received sixth place. All four students have qualified to compete at the State meet in San Antonio on April 9.
Last week at the Plainview TMSCA competition, Daniel Peña placed first in the sixth grade Science out of 32 students. Austin Watts placed fifth in the eighth grade Science category. Both students will be competing at the state TMSCA competition along with the students listed above.
The TMSCA students still have one more competition left to attend, the regional meet at Wylie next weekend. One of the coaches, Larry Hopple, said, "We are always proud of every student that competes in TMSCA. These four students show the strength of our science program at SMS and SISD as a whole. We could not be as successful as we are without the support of all those teachers in the lower grades. They come to SMS well prepared as shown by the exemplary schools of SISD."
