After suffering a tough 10-9 loss against Pecos on the first day of action, Sweetwater High School came back to earn a fifth-place finish at the TTCA regional team tennis tournament. SHS dominated Midland Greenwood 10-1 before defeating Levelland 13-6 to win fifth place.
Joe Lopez, Brandon Ellison, Javier Solano, Dugan Thompson, Heidi Taylor, Addisyn Cleckler and Kristen Casto won in singles against Pecos while Ellison-Lopez and Chris Hernandez-Madison Meneses won in doubles.Hernandez-Meneses also won 8-5 against Greenwood, while Thompson and Jenny Ordway won 8-0 in No. 1 girls doubles and Taylor-Cleckler won 8-1 in No. 2 girls doubles. Austin Coth-erman-Michael Foust (8-2), Ellison-Lopez (8-4) and Solano-Stephen Shipp (8-4) all won their matches in boys doubles and Foust, Lopez, Thompson, Meneses and Cleckler were all winners in singles.
Hernandez, Foust, Elli-son, Lopez, Solano, Ordway, Thompson, Taylor, Meneses and Casto won their singles matches against Levelland. Hernandez-Meneses also won in mixed doubles while in girls doubles, Ordway-Thompson beat Levelland’s No. 1 team 8-1 and Taylor-Meneses also won their doubles match 8-6. “I am very pleased with how hard we fought back and played against the final two teams,” said coach Shella Arnwine. “We knew what we had to do and we did it. We have worked hard all year and ended the team tennis season on a good note.”
