Jayci Shelton did more than just set a meet record with her time of 45.56 seconds in the 300-meter hurdles Friday at the West Texas Relays in Odessa.
The SHS senior’s winning time eclipsed the old record of 46.54 set in 2004 by her coach. Jessica Withrow was a high school star at Muleshoe when she set the previous Division II meet mark for the 300-meter hurdles, a mark broken Friday by Shelton. Losing the record, Withrow said, was “kind of bittersweet.”
But Withrow, who also was a star heptathlete in college at Abilene Christian University and had multiple appearances at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Championships, added, “I’m so proud of her.”
Shelton also won the 100 hurdles (15.61) for Sweetwater, which had just 12 girls at the Odessa meet but still managed to score 124 points and tie Crane for second place. Kinsey Browning won the triple jump (34-8 3/4) and was fourth in both hurdles; Kendra Crosson was third in the 200; Kelsi Crosson was third in the triple jump and fifth in the 300 hurdles; Destiny Osteen was second and Alicia Finn third in the shot put; the 800 relay was second; and the 1600 relay was third.
