Women Infants and Children (WIC) have teamed up with surrounding hospitals to help patients get the most out of their breastfeeding experience.
WIC Breastfeeding Peer Counselors are professionally trained through the Texas Department of State Services WIC Counselors program curriculum. Counselors are carefully chosen for their own breastfeeding experience and employed by the WIC program to assist and encourage pregnant and breastfeeding mothers.
Research has shown a significant increase in the initiation and duration of breastfeeding with peer counselor intervention. Rosa Best, MSN, Susan Morin, Senior Breastfeeding Peer Counselor and Saundra Lane, RN are working together and are very excited to start this program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
The breastfeeding Peer Counselors come in as volunteers and help with basic breastfeeding skills and educate new moms on the benefits of breastfeeding. Counselors make appropriate referrals to physicians, hospitals, lactation consultants and other providers when needed.
They also provide clinic and phone consults, hospital and home visits (where available), and help with breast pumps. Upon discharge from the hospital, peer counselors follow up with new moms by calling and discussing any concerns they might have at that time. WIC has established a hotline for breastfeeding mothers: 800-687-1252.
Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital provides services to many surrounding counties and are pleased to announce they have recently welcomed Ronnie Dennis, M.D. to their staff. Dr. Dennis is a Board Certified Obstetrician and Gynecologist. Jeremy Smola, D.O. has provided family practice services since 1993 and reopened his OB/GYN practice in 2010.
