For both the Sweetwater High School baseball and softball teams, today marks the beginning of perhaps the most import-ant part of their seasons.
Both teams will be playing their next four District 5-3A games in front of their home fans, starting with Brownwood today.
The Lady Mustang softball team (1-1 in district, 10-9 overall) plays at 5 p.m. while the baseball team — which is 0-1 in District 5-3A and 10-11-1 for the season — will begin its game against Brownwood at 7 p.m.
Both squads played non-district home games over the weekend. The SHS softball team tuned up for Brownwood (2-0) with an easy 19-4 win over Crane, while the SHS baseball team hosted Class 5A Odessa High and lost 10-0. The Mustangs got just three hits — singles by Cole Maxwell, Cameron Fox and Austin Burt — in a game called by the 10-run rule after five innings.
Sweetwater, which lost 14-13 to Wylie in its district opener, will try to get back on track today against Brownwood (1-0) while the SHS softball team — which beat Wylie 7-6 at Wylie this past Tuesday for its first district win in two years — will be shooting for its third straight victory. But it won’t be easy against a Brownwood team that, like the baseball team, was the district champion this past season. After today, both SHS teams will host Snyder this Friday and continue their homestand next week with games against Big Spring and Wylie.
