LUBBOCK — The Sweet-water High School girls golf team finished in sixth place at the Region I-3A tourna-ment that ended Tuesday at Lubbock’s Meadowbrook Canyon course, failing to pick up any ground despite a slight improvement during the final round of play.
The Lady Mustangs shot 372 — three strokes better than their opening 375 Monday — to finish the two-day event at 747. While that was better than 10 teams, it failed to qualify the Lady Mustangs for a berth in the state tournament, which goes to only the top two teams as well as the top two individuals not on a qualifying team. Andrews won the event with a 645 total while Burkburnett took the No. 2 spot with a 667. Snyder placed third at 675, while Pecos (696) and Monahans (697) also finished ahead of Sweetwater.
Katie High and Jodie May tied for individual honors for Sweetwater as both shot 182. High finished with an 89 Tuesday, while May shot 91. Sarah Witt shot 90-184, Elise Lawrence 103-200 and Alex Gomez 102-201 to round out the team.
The SHS boys will be represented by Ryan Mercer as a medalist beginning today at the Region I-3A tourna-ment, which ends Thursday and is also being played at Lubbock’s Meadowbrook Canyon course.
Mercer, a junior and son of SHS boys golf coach Steve Mercer, is making his third straight regional appearance, all of them as a medalist. However, he will be trying to qualify for the state tournament for the first time. Mercer finished in a tie for 10th place at last year’s regional tournament.
