ABILENE — Tickets for the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame Banquet to be held May 9 at the Abilene Civic Center are on sale through Friday, April 29.
This year’s banquet will honor a group of 10 for-mer athletes, coaches, of-ficials and sportswriters who have been selected to the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame. Among those honored in the 2011 class are ex-Sweetwater High School and Baylor football star Mike Welch, who starred for the Mus-tangs and Bears in the 1980s and early ‘90s and was named a second-team defensive back on Texas Football Magazine’s 50th anniversary high school football team. He was the only Big Country athlete to be named to the team.
Lady Mustang camp is June 6-9
A Lady Mustang basketball camp that is for students who are completing grades 1-7 will be held at Sweetwater Middle School June 6-9.
The goal of the camp is to improve the skills of players through instruc-tion in individual skills and fun team competitions. Pre-registration for the camp is encouraged.
The Sweetwater Stam-pede, an Arena League football team of fourth and fifth graders, defeated the Abilene Jets 41-6 this past weekend and will now have a second-round playoff game at 9:30 a.m. this Saturday at the Abilene Expo Center against the Abilene Chargers. The winner plays either the Abilene Cowboys or Jim Ned Indians for the championship at 1:30 p.m.
The public is encour-aged to come watch these boys play. The Stampede is 8-0 this season.
