Ryan Mercer of Sweetwa-ter will be competing in the Class 3A boys state golf tournament as a medalist starting at 9:55 a.m. Thursday at the Roy Kizer Golf Course in Austin. The 36-hole tourna-ment wraps up Friday.
Mercer is making his first trip to state after finish-ing as the No. 2 medalist earlier this month at the Region I-3A tournament in Lubbock. He had the lowest score of any regional medalist who was not on one of the top two teams.
Mercer is Sweetwater’s first medalist qualifier at the Class 3A boys tournament since 2007, when Travis Henson competed at the Morris Williams Course in Austin.
Henson shot rounds of 74-77 for a 151 total that year to earn all-state honors and finish in a tie for fourth place, just missing a top-three medal. He had the lowest score of any player qualifying as a medalist. Henson was coached by current SHS boys golf coach Steve Mercer, who is Ryan’s father. A feature story about Ryan Mercer in Monday’s paper incorrectly stated that this week’s tournament will mark the first time that Steve Mercer has coached a player at Austin in the state tournament. Mercer’s older son Shane was on the 2001 SHS team that captured the 3A state championship. In addition, Mercer’s daughter Brittany played on the 2005 SHS girls team that finished third at the Class 3A state tournament.
Ex-SHS golf coach Asbill records his fourth hole in one
Eddie Asbill of Sweetwater had his fourth career ace while playing at Sweetwater Country Club recently. The former SHS boys golf coach was playing No. 2 and used a 9-iron to record his ace on the hole that measured 158 yards. The witnesses to Asbill’s latest feat were Jim Nichols, Loren Bryant and Gary Schubert.
