When it comes to the latest medical technology and equipment, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) continues to provide Nolan County much of the same capabilities as larger hospitals in Abilene and the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.
Donna Boatright has announced RPMH has installed a new Doppler echocardiogram and vascular ultrasound system that helps doctors examine the organs of patients without ionizing radiation (as used in x-rays).
“We’re proud that hospital now has this advanced equipment,” said Dr. Frederick Kassis who practices internal medicine at RPMH. “While we’ve always had ultrasound capabilities, the new equipment is considered an upgrade and is the same as other hospitals in larger metropolitan areas use.”
The new ultrasound system involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves to produce pictures of the inside of the body. Unlike x-rays, images are captured in real-time and show the structures and movement of the body's internal organs. In addition, physicians can also see blood flowing through blood vessels, which provide various diagnosis applications.
The benefits of the Doppler echocardiogram and vascular ultrasound are enhanced clarity, and the capability of future enhancement of 3- and 4-deminsional images. The new equipment is 30 percent lighter than older models and is 40 percent smaller in size, providing more space for physicians to work with patients.
“This is just another example of how Rolling Plains Memorial is able to care for local residents just as efficiently as hospitals in larger metropolitan areas,” said Dr. Kassis. “Having equipment like this helps physicians, like myself, diagnose and treat patients quickly.”
More than 10 percent of patients who require ultrasounds at RPMH are children and teenagers under the age of 16. This hospital now has the same model as Cook Children’s in Fort Worth, Texas.
