Two of the five Sweetwater Little League teams in action Monday easily advanced after first-round victories at their single-elimination District 5 tournaments, each held at different Abilene locations.
The winners were the Major League Diamondbacks, who crushed the Breckenridge Giants 18-2; and the Minor League Reds, who cruised to a 14-1 victory over the Merkel Sluggers.
The Diamondbacks advance to a second-round game at 6 p.m. Thursday against the Abilene Northern A’s at the Abilene Northern field, while the Reds also play at 6 p.m. Thursday when they face the Southern Red Raiders at Abilene’s Dixie field.
Three other Sweetwater Little League teams also played Monday but were eliminated. In the Minor League, the Astros were shut out by Jim Ned’s Rangers 10-0; in the Major League, Sweetwater’s Rangers lost 10-0 to the Clyde Reds; and Sweetwater’s Angels fell to Abilene South’s Longhorns in a close 8-7 contest in Junior League action.
The Major League Reds, Junior League Red Sox and Senior League Blue Jays all play first-round tournament games today. The Reds face the Clyde Phillies at 6 p.m. at Abilene’s Key City field, while the Red Sox play the Snyder Astros at 7 p.m. at Wylie.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays play Wylie’s Cardinals at 5:45 p.m. at Abilene South. The winners will all play again Thursday in what will be second-round games. However, the Blue Jays need only two tournament wins to reach the title game Friday. The Red Sox will need just three victories to play for their championship, which will be held on Saturday.
