"Let me share my story with you," says Maria Aguirre-Acuña. "I graduated from high school in Del Rio, Texas in 1984. Neither of my parents finished high school. My mother stayed home to care for us and my father was a janitor. My father cannot fully read and write. My mother was from Mexico but learned English and helped our neighbors and friends fill out applications and other paperwork. Both of my parents encouraged us to get an education but it was my mother that pushed us to seek learning and become citizens that could help others in their community. Being the oldest of three and knowing our financial situation at home was not one that could easily pay for college, I found and chose Texas State Technical College."
Aguirre-Acuña says that TSTC was the best choice she made for her future. At TSTC she learned office technology and furthered her accounting skills. Upon graduation she was given an opportunity to work at the college as a recruiter and she took it. In 2003, she enrolled in college once more to finish her Bachelor's degree and completed it in 2006. "With the desire to keep learning and continue to grow my career opportunities, I once again enrolled in college in 2009 for a Master's degree — I just finished a couple of weeks ago."
Today, Aguirre-Acuña is the Director of Admissions/Registrar at TSTC.
"So for me the answer is yes I can! – Si se puede! This can be your answer, too. I invite you to attend Hispanic Success- Éxito Hispano and become at TSTC student and prepare yourself to begin a college education and career."
