WACO - Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-old all-stars used a 16-hit attack to crush Wichita Falls, 14-5, in Wednesday’s opening game of their Texas West Section 2 Little League tournament.
Sweetwater now faces Fort Worth University at 8:15 p.m. today and needs another win to move into the semifinals. If Sweetwater wins today, it will play Waco Midway at 8:15 p.m. Friday; if Sweetwater loses today, it will play The Colony at 6 p.m. Friday.
No Sweetwater batter was hotter on Wednesday than Kiante McCoy, who went 4-for-4 and hit a pair of three-run homers. McCoy belted his first homer in a six-run third inning and connected again in the fifth to give Sweetwater its final three runs.
Kobe Clark had three hits, including a double, while Ky Hoover, Jordan McGee and Mason Maxwell had two hits and Chris Thompson, Isak Alvarez and Andrew Melendez one. Hoover, Maxwell and Thompson also had doubles.
Sweetwater wasted little time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the first and two in the second to take a 5-0 lead before exploding for six runs in the third to go up 11-2. Wichita Falls narrowed the lead to 11-5 until Sweetwater scored its last three runs in the fifth.
Six different hurlers took the mound, starting with Tristan Longoria, who pitched into the third inning. Alvarez, Maxwell, Hoover, Clark and Thompson also pitched.
