WACO - After scoring 14 runs against Wichita Falls in Wednesday’s opener, Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-old all-stars ran into a buzzsaw Thursday at the Texas West Section 2 Little League tournament as they fell to Fort Worth University, 10-0, in four innings.
Sweetwater, which failed to get a hit and had just one baserunner in the contest, must bounce back today in order to keep its sectional title hopes alive and stay in the tournament.
The District 5 champions will face Wichita Falls again starting at 6 p.m. in an elimination game at Waco Midway’s Little League complex. If Sweetwater wins, it will advance to Saturday’s losers bracket final that starts at 7:30 p.m. Fort Worth University plays Midway at 8:15 p.m. today in the semifinals, and the loser will face either Sweetwater or Wichita Falls. The championship game will be held Sunday.
Sweetwater’s only baserunner on Thursday was Mason Maxwell, who drew a walk in the second inning. Fort Worth University’s pitcher faced just 13 batters in the contest, which was shortened to four innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.
Fort Worth University, which won last year’s 9-10 year-old sectional tournament in Fort Worth by defeating Sweetwater in the title game, had just five hits in Thursday’s contest. However, two of them were home runs and Fort Worth University also drew seven walks, five of which resulted in runs.
Kiante McCoy, Kobe Clark, Jordan McGee and Chris Thompson pitched for Sweetwater.
