Sweetwater’s two junior varsity football teams won their season openers at Vernon on Thursday.
JV White 16, Vernon 6
Sweetwater White used a pair of second-half touchdowns to subdue Vernon.
Ty Davis made it 6-0 with a 27-yard interception return in the third quarter, and Kaegan Jeffrey ran for two more points. T.C. Huitt raced 55 yards for a TD in the fourth period, and Jeffrey threw to Martese Harris for two points. Other standouts were Angel Caballero and Stephen May on offense and Xavier Jones, Bray Amos and Andrew Davis on defense. “It’s always nice to get a win on the road,” said coach Jarrett Vickers. “We wore them down and it showed in the second half.”
JV Red 20,Vernon 0
Sweetwater Red pushed across three rushing touch-downs, two by Kris Duran and one by Mark McCann, while shutting out Vernon’s offense to win its opener.
Duran scored on a 2-yard run in the second period. and added a 5-yard TD run in the third quarter, plus a 50-yard burst. McCann also scored in the third period on a 22-yard run, and Seth Peeples ran over a two-point conversion. Peeples also completed a 32-yard pass to Zach Carrasco. The defense preserved the shutout with a goal line stand in the fourth quarter. Sweetwater defenders who contributed to the shutout included McCann (tackle for loss), T.J. Williams, Chris Castro, Sean Norman, Chris Figueroa and Trey Harvey.
The offensive line of Zack Garcia, Ryan Lujan, Jona-than Neri, Mark Ruiz, Chris Hill, Chris Coons and Kev-in Thompson also was sin-gled out for praise by coach Al Hunt. “The offense con-trolled the ball and clock,” he said. The defense kept the shutout by making its final stand with 15 seconds remaining in the game.
