ROTAN — Charles Thornton, 70, died Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011, at Rolling Plains Hospital in Sweetwater. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday at the Church of Christ in Rotan. Burial will follow at Belvieu Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 5-6 p.m. on Monday at the funeral home.
Born Dec. 8, 1940, in Bisbee, Ariz., Charles was a son of the late C.J. and Helen (Ailes) Thornton. Charles moved to Rotan in 1941. He attended San Angelo College and married Janice Earle (David) on Aug. 23, 1961, in Rotan. Charles was the Postmaster in Rotan for 19 years and later in Snyder for eight years when he retired. He was a member of the National Association of Postmasters, the Rotan ISD School Board, Chamber of Commerce, the Jaycees, he was a Little League manager and a volunteer firefighter for Rotan. Charles enjoyed woodworking, gardening, golf and was known for being able to fix anything, even broken glass. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Rotan.
Charles is preceded in death by his parents; his wife; and two brothers, Gene and Donald Thornton.
Charles is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, David and Carla Thornton of Rotan; one daughter and son-in-law, Jenna and Ward Hayes of Sweetwater; seven grandchildren, Bre Marquis, Kollin and her husband Johnny Smith, Caila Thornton, Cameron Thornton, Charles Tate Hayes, Mackensey Hayes and Hanna Hayes; three great-grandchildren, Hudson Smith, Layne Smith and Caisen Lee.
In lieu of flowers the family has requested that donations be made to a charity of choice.
