Bernard Joe Ferris passed away on Thursday, Sept. 22, 2011, in Abilene, Texas. Bernie was born Nov. 16, 1922, in Denver Colorado, and grew up in Lakewood, Colorado. He received a Bachelor’s and a Master’s degree in geological engineering from the Colorado School of Mines where he was awarded Shell Oil Company’s first graduate fellowship in petroleum geology.
Ferris held a number of technical and managerial positions at Shell Oil, including Division Exploration Manager, Manager of Geological Research and Chief Geologist of the International Region. Upon retiring from Shell in Houston, he accepted a position with an independent oil and gas company in Denver where he became Senior Vice President of Exploration. He published a number of technical papers in several geological and/or geophysical journals.
During World War II he served his country as a training officer in the Corps of Engineers, U.S. Army where he was an instructor in bridge construction.
Bernie enjoyed a number of recreational activities including traveling, skiing, mountain trail hiking, parlor magic, ballroom dancing and ping pong. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Sweetwater.
He was preceded in death by his wife Betty of 64 years, his brother Evans, and his sister Carol.
He is survived by his daughter, Susan Johnson, and her husband Bill, of Sweetwater; his son, Randy Ferris, and his wife, Sharily, of Durango, Colorado; and his grandchildren, Justin Johnson, of Dallas; and Jenny Fernandez and her husband, Mike, of San Antonio.
There will be a family memorial and burial held in Pueblo, Colorado.
In lieu of flowers memorials will be appreciated at the Sears Methodist Hospice, One Village Drive, Suite 300, Abilene, Texas 79606; the American Cancer Society, 209 S. Danville, Abilene, Texas 79605; and the First United Methodist Church, 309 Cedar Street, Sweetwater, Texas 79556. McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater is in charge of arrangements.
