42 years has a domino effect of German sausage making in Slaton, Texas. On Sunday, October 16, 2011, the annual St. Joseph's German Sausage Festival will be held at St. Joseph's Hall. Dinner will be served from 11:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. The main menu consists of German sausage, grilled chicken, homemade German potato salad, green beans, cranberry sauce, cakes and breads. Take-out plates will be available at the south side of St. Joseph's Hall.
St. Joseph's German Sausage started in 1969 with a 200-year old recipe from Austria belonging to Marie Bednarz. The recipe was increased for the Slaton version. The first year, 524 pounds of German sausage were made. In 2011, 8000 pounds will be made. Jalapenos are added to about 1000 pounds of sausage for those who like a little more spice. This year, for extra spicy sausage, habaneros will be added. The German sausage helps to support St. Joseph's School.
Preparation starts months in advance to prepare for the Sausage Festival. Sausage Week is where members, schools, parents and friends gather to make 600 pounds of German potato salad and 150 loaves of homemade bread. Homemade quilts are also being sewed by the St. Joseph's Ladies Quilting Club.
A FunFest will also be held at St. Joseph's School from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. There will be a silent and live auction, games, music, food, a quilting show, rock wall, spider climb, country store and the Catholic Daughters mini-bazaar. There will also be raffles for quilts and a cedar chest.
The Sausage Festival on October 16, 2011--for good German sausage--is coming your way at 20th and Division in Slaton, Texas. Come on Saturday, October 15, to buy sausage (regular and jalapeno) both cooked and vacuum-sealed.
