Highland was on the verge of handing Gordon its first loss of the year this past Friday. But the Longhorns, who trailed 32-16 at halftime and 56-40 after three periods, ran off the last 22 points to deny the Hornets’ upset bid and pull out a 62-56 win at Highland.
Highland (2-4) enjoyed 16-point leads on four separate occasions, the last time after a 67-yard kickoff return by Ron Covington for a TD and Steven Tester’s PAT to make it 56-40 in the third period, only to see Gordon pull out the win on a 1-yard run with just 1:37 left and improve to 6-0.
Covington had three TD passes in addition to his kick return, starting with an 8-yard throw to Tester in the first quarter. Covington’s other TD passes covered 6 yards to Jordan Rowan in the second quarter and 5 yards to Tyler Falcon in the third period. Highland also scored on a pair of Falcon first-half TD runs, and Tester had a 1-yard TD run. Falcon rushed for 105 yards and Tester, who kicked seven PATs, rushed for 90 yards and Peyton Howard had 18 yards. Covington was 11-of-20 passing for 109 yards with no interceptions. Shelby Howard and Falcon had three catches, Tester two and Rowan, Michael Hyde and Garrett Stewart one. Peyton Howard and Tester recovered fumbles. Also on defense, Covington had 12 solo tackles and one assist; Falcon had 10 tackles and two assists; Tester had seven tackles and three assists; Shelby Howard had five tackles and five assists; Hyde had four tackles and four assists; Peyton Howard had four tackles and two assists; Rowan had two tackles and two assists; and Ethan Wison and Stewart both had two tackles and one assist.
Trent 65, Blackwell 16
Trent improved its record to 6-0 with a mercy-rule win Friday at Blackwell, which is now 0-6. Trent led 43-16 at halftime before closing out the game in the third period.
Blackwell briefly tied the game at 8-8 in the first quarter on a touchdown run by Jayden Jones and Matthew Meyer’s successful PAT kick, but its only other points came on a pass late in the second quarter from Ethan Andrews to Mason Magness, followed by a Meyer PAT kick. Andrews threw for 133 yards and Jones ran for 35. Andrews’ favorite receiving targets were Jones, Ted Chambliss, Kaleb Edwards and Magness. Jones had eight tackles, Chambliss five, Edwards four and Magness three. Chambliss also recovered a fumble for the Hornets, who are idle this Friday.
