ASPERMONT — This is one Highland won’t forget for awhile.
The Hornets, a big under-dog to Aspermont, stayed with their hosts from start to finish in a thrilling six-man football game Friday.
The game was tied 6-6 after one quarter and 18-18 at halftime, and it got better as Highland was ahead 30-24 after three periods, and again 36-31 early in the fourth quarter. Aspermont led 43-36 with 3:28 to play. But Highland’s Tyler Falcon scored on a 1-yard run to cut it to 43-42 with :05 left and set up a potential two-point extra point kick to win the game. But the snap on the kick went over the holder’s head, allowing Aspermont (9-0, 2-0 district) to escape with a win while Highland fell to 2-7, 0-2 in district.
Friday’s game was tied on five occasions and the lead changed hands in the contest five times as well, with all of the lead changes taking place in an exhilarating second half until Aspermont went ahead to stay.
For Highland, Falcon had three scores, two of them on runs and the other on an 8-yard reception on a pass thrown by Ron Covington. Steven Tester also had two scoring runs for Highland, and both he and Falcon ran for over 100 yards. Coving-ton threw for 118 yards on 8-of-16 passing with two TD throws to Jordan Rowan, as well as the one to Falcon.
Shelby Howard had three catches for 68 yards, Rowan three for 30 and Falcon two for 20. Shelby Howard and Peyton Howard recovered fumbles, while Falcon had 12 tackles, Covington nine and Tester and Peyton Howard seven apiece.
