After losing at Abilene High this past Friday, the Sweetwater girls were back home Monday to continue their three-game gauntlet against Class 5A competition. But the re-sult was no better, as the Lady Mustangs lost to San Angelo Central, 61-48.
Alicia Finn’s 13 points led Sweetwater (3-2), which will host Abilene Cooper today. Suede Shir-ley had nine, Shelby Cason and Candice Hernandez six, Kendra Crosson five, Kinsey Browning four, Hayley Brownlow three and Kathleen Campbell two for the Lady Stangs.
Sweetwater trailed Central by eight, 41-33, at intermission despite playing what head coach Candice Wyatt said was their best half of the season. But the team was hurt by 29 turnovers and poor free throw shooting (6-of-22 at the line).
Sweetwater’s junior varsity and freshman girls, however, both won on Monday. The freshmen (5-1) won 40-27 while the JV (4-1) downed Central’s JV, 36-25. For the JV, Shaneese Brown had 11 points, Maddie Jones 10, Kayla Chowning six, Mikki Reschman five and Larissa Locklar four. Cierra Knox had 11, Claire Williams seven, Lexi Castillo, Jasmine Reddic and Nisha Williams five, Abby McPherson three and Bianca Castillo and Gabby Reyes two for the freshmen, who placed second Saturday at an Abilene High tournament.
