A three-game gauntlet against Class 5A foes is finally over for the Sweetwater girls basketball team.
Tuesday’s 46-27 loss to Abilene Cooper was the Lady Mustangs’ third in a row after a 3-0 start. The Lady Coogs held Sweetwa-ter to just eight field goals and its lowest point total of the young season.
Sweetwater started well, hitting three first-quarter field goals in a 26-second span to take a 6-3 lead, and trailed just 11-9 at the end of the period. But Cooper held the Lady Mustangs to just one field goal over the next two periods, outscoring them 26-8 to take a 20-point lead (37-17) into the fourth quarter.
Sweetwater rallied some-what at the start of the final period, but the Lady Mus-tangs — coming off losses to Abilene High and San Angelo Central — never got closer than 14 points.
Alicia Finn led Sweetwa-ter with 12 points and Candice Hernandez had eight, including two three-pointers. Kendra Crosson had four points, Suede Shirley two and Kelsi Crosson one. The Lady Mustangs don’t play again until Nov. 29 at Clyde.
Coach Candice Wyatt said the holiday break will be helpful for her team.
“The hustle was there tonight,” she said. “We just weren’t executing. We didn’t shoot the ball as much as usual, and when we did, it didn’t go in. We’re a little tired after playing two nights in a row.”
Sweetwater won the sub-varsity games, however. The freshmen are now 6-1 after beating Cooper 48-41, while the junior varsity (5-1) escaped with a 32-31 victory on a last-second shot by Kayla Chowning.
Shaneese Brown had 11 points and Chowning nine for the JV, which led 19-10 at halftime. Mikki Resch-man had four and Maddie Jones, Larissa Locklar, Sydney Vanderbilt and Tay-lor McPherson all scored two for the Lady Mustangs.
Claire Williams scored 26 points for the freshmen, half of them in the third quarter when Sweetwater outscored Cooper 17-7 to break a 19-19 halftime deadlock.
Cierra Knox and Lexi Castillo had eight points, while Abby McPherson had four and Bianca Castillo two. Both Sweetwater teams also play again Nov. 29.
