The Sweetwater girls basketball team ended a four-game slide by winning twice Thursday at the Ballinger tournament. The Highland girls, meanwhile, did the same with a couple of wins on Thursday at the Bronte tournament as they exten-ded their winning streak to seven games.
Highland (7-1) slipped by Bronte 37-36 in its first game as Kara Hughey scored 15 points and Sierra Allen and Beth Richburg nine each, and then downed Colorado City 31-14 as Allen had 13 points.
Sweetwater’s girls (5-4) started out with a 37-20 win over Abilene High’s JV at the Ballinger tournament, and they also won 36-28 over Hawley’s varsity. In the win over Abilene High’s JV, Sweetwater was led by Kendra Crosson with 14 points, while Crosson and Alicia Finn each scored 11 points in the team’s win over Hawley and Hayley Brownlow scored eight.
The Sweetwater boys, however, began with a 50-47 loss to Reagan County on Thursday at the Coahoma tournament as the Mustangs saw their record fall to 2-4.
Sweetwater led 25-22 at halftime, and extended its lead over Reagan County to five points (38-33) after three periods only to be out-scored 17-9 in the final eight minutes. Sweetwater was led by Kaleb Hoover with 15 points while Taylor Jones also reached double figures with 11. Other team results from area tourneys will run when they are available.
