Both of the Sweetwater junior varsity basketball teams captured tournament championships Saturday.
The JV boys (8-1) won all four games at Jayton as they defeated Forsan 38-29, routed Breckenridge’s freshman team 42-10, edged the Colorado City JV 20-18 in an overtime semifinal and defeated Breckenridge’s JV 39-30 in the title game.
The freshman boys (3-2) also played at Jayton but lost both of their games, falling to Colorado City 33-29 and to Crosbyton 44-43.
The Sweetwater JV girls won all three of their games at Big Spring’s tournament to win the title and improve their record to 9-1. The Lady Mustangs began by defeating Big Spring’s JV 43-23, then whipped Abilene Cooper 38-11 and beat Colorado City, 10-7, in a low-scoring title game in which neither team scored a point in the second half.
Shaneese Brown had five points to lead Sweetwater in the championship game and also had a team-high 13 against Abilene Cooper, while Taylor McPherson had 10 and Brown nine vs. Big Spring. Tournament MVP Trey Taylor had 12 points for the JV boys in their title game at Jayton and Brandon Howell added 11 in beating the Breckenridge JV. Taylor had 10 against Colorado City’s JV; Deandre Gatson had 10 against the Breckenridge freshmen; and Taylor 14 against Forsan.
For the freshman boys, Duanta Williams had a team-high eight points vs. C-City and Bray Amos scored 11 points vs. Crosbyton.
