The Sweetwater girls completed play at Stanton’s basketball tournament with a pair of wins on Friday as they defeated Stanton’s JV and Brownfield’s varsity by scores of 52-20 and 49-38, respectively.
The Sweetwater boys, who are also playing at Stanton, began Friday by defeating Crane 52-48 in overtime before losing 53-36 to Wall in the consolation semis.
For the girls (8-8), Alicia Finn had 16 vs. Stanton’s JV while Kinsey Browning had 15 points and Candice Hernandez 13 in the game against Brownfield.
After losing in Thursday’s opener, the boys (5-7) came back on Friday to get an overtime victory over Crane as sophomore Kaleb Hoover’s poured in 26 points and Taylor Jones added nine, before losing to Wall as the teams played for the second time in 10 days. The Mustangs got 13 from Hoover while Jones had 11 points in the rematch. The team was scheduled to play Coahoma in a guaranteed game on Saturday.
The host Highland girls reached the finals of their tournament with a 45-13 win over Roscoe on Friday. For Highland (10-3), it was a second straight lopsided victory following a 51-10 rout of Rotan. Sierra Allen paced the Lady Hornets with 15 points while Kara Hughey and Beth Richburg had nine, Jessica McCain six, Madison Moseley four and Tarin Weldy two.
For Roscoe (6-5), Caro-lina Perez scored five points, Natalie Anthony and Lynnsi Moses three and Faith Boren two.
Highland was scheduled to face Garden City for the championship. Garden City won 58-50 over Loraine in its semifinal. The Highland boys ((1-9) lost 34-30 vs. Robert Lee despite getting 13 points from Ron Coving-ton, and Roscoe’s boys lost to Loraine 39-34 as their record fell to 0-7. Roscoe got 15 from Jesus Leanos while Keeston Ford had 13 points. Like the girls, the boys were scheduled to end their tournament with the title game on Saturday.
