It was a last-minute decision by Rachel Ramirez to enter her husband, Antonio, into the “Light My Home for the Holidays,” a contest sponsored by KTXS and WTU Retail Energy. “Good thing she did,” he said.
Abilene resident Antonio Ramirez, 43, was chosen as the winner of one year’s worth of free electricity from WTU during the annual KTXS Christmas Lights Parade on Nov. 29. His free year, up to $3,000, begins in January.
Ramirez, a truck driver, said the announcement came as a big surprise and a great relief.
“We’re helping out our son and his family, who are staying with us, so this will help us out a lot,” Ramirez said. “I can’t believe I won. It’s like you go from praying for something good to happen to it actually happening. It’s awesome.”
The KTXS Christmas Lights Parade kicks off the holiday season in Abilene. The event is the feature event at the annual City Sidewalks Celebration held in downtown Abilene the Tuesday after Thanksgiving Day.
WTU Retail Electricity also is proud to be a major sponsor of the parade for the 4th straight year.
“In the spirit of sharing and giving, WTU is happy to offer a family this token of our appreciation,” said Jim Steffes, Vice President of WTU Retail Energy. “We’re happy to help the Ramirez family during a time of need and hope their holidays, and the rest of the year for that matter, are brighter for it.”
An estimated 12,000 to 15,000 people attended the event while thousands more watched from home. Last year, more than 100 lighted floats constructed by local children’s schools, Scout troops and other non-profit organizations paraded through downtown Abilene in a massive parade of lights.
