The Sweetwater eighth grade Red boys and Sweetwater seventh grade Red girls both came away with championships in middle school basketball tournaments that were played earlier this month.
Sweetwater’s eighth grade boys Red team took the title at the Wall tournament on Jan. 6-7 by winning games over Wylie’s ‘B’ team, 44-16; Ballinger, 37-16; and finally Wall, 36-18, in the champ-ionship game.
Michael Hunt had 19, D’Jaman West seven, J’Corey Amos five, Denzell Moore four, Colton Jackson three and Hardy Escobar, Joe Ruiz and Adrian Vizzerra two against Wylie ‘B’ while against Ballinger, Hunt had 10 points, Moore and Michael Lawrence six, Amos five and Jackson and Vizzerra four. Hunt scored eight, Michael and Mark Lawrence six, Jackson five, Ruiz four, Escobar three and Moore and Vizzerra two for Sweetwater in its championship game win over Wall.
The Sweetwater seventh grade boys Red team also played at Wall’s tournament that was held Jan. 6-7 and rebounded from an opening loss to win the consolation title by beating Crane 24-21.
Sweetwater lost to Wylie ‘A’ 37-20 before defeating Wall ‘B’ 39-19 in the semifinals.
Against Wylie ‘A,’ Jacoby Hunt scored a team-high 11 points while Daniel Olguin had four, Keenan Cox and Jordan McGee two and Frank Ortega one. Against Wall ‘B’, Hunt had 15, Matthew Figueroa 10, Olguin eight, Ortega six and Cox and McGee two.
Hunt and Figueroa shared scoring honors against Crane in the consolation title game with six points while also scoring were McGee with four and Olguin, Cox, John Clift and Christian Acuna with two.
Sweetwater also hosted a middle school girls tourna-ment on Jan. 6-7.
The seventh grade girls team won first place honors, while the seventh grade girls White team and eighth grade girls White team placed second. The eighth grade girls Red team lost their first two games before winning their final contest.
The Sweetwater seventh grade girls Red team defeated Merkel 9-5 and Midland Christian 31-27 for the title.
Against Merkel, Stephan-ie Castillo had five points while Maddie Berry and Lauren Jones had two each. Kensi Chowning scored 15 and Castillo and Jones six against Midland Christian while both Berry and Anna-liese Espinoza scored two points.
The seventh grade girls White beat Midland Chris-tian 37-16 and Colorado City to reach the final before losing in OT to Jim Ned 25-23. Sonya Sanchez and Amber Smith had six, Natalie Valdez four and Jacinda Garcia, Mallory Carney, Danielle Vega and Destiny Renteria two vs. Jim Ned; Garcia had 13, Smith and Vega six, Angel Hogan and Reagan Norrell four, Sanchez three, Bergan Trevino two and Renteria one against Midland Christian; and Vega had five, Smith and Garcia four, Valdez two and Trevino one against Colorado City.
The Sweetwater eighth grade girls White team beat Midland Christian 35-2 and Colorado City 34-15 to get to the title game before losing to Jim Ned 22-20. Ashley Bax and Ashley Parker had eight points, Marisa Mon-cada and Hanna Hayes six, Payton Moore, Jade John-son and Karleigh Coldiron two and Lena Martinez one against Midland Christian in Game 1 while against Colorado City, Alyssa Villa-nueva had 11 points, Parker six, Moore five and Martin-ez, Bax, Hayes, Johnson, Coldiron and Caroline Guelker two.
In the championship game loss to Jim Ned, Moncada was Sweetwater’s leading scorer with six points while Bax had four points, Villanueva three, Martinez, Parker and Hayes two and Moore one.
