Despite scoring just five points in the second half, Sweetwater’s JV girls basketball team beat Wylie 28-27 here Friday.
With the win, the Lady Mustangs stayed unbeaten (2-0) in District 5-3A play and improved to 14-4 for the season. Taylor McPherson scored eight points to pace Sweetwater while Shaneese Brown had seven, Maddie Jones four, Mikki Reschman three and Kayla Chowning, Lar-issa Locklar and Claire Williams two. Sweetwater was ahead 11-8 after one quarter and 23-18 at halftime, but it was tied at 24 after three periods.
The Sweetwater freshman girls, however, fell to 1-1 in district play after losing to Wylie 43-34.
Cierra Knox scored 13 points to lead Sweetwater. Bianca Castillo had nine, Abby McPherson eight and Lexi Castillo and Jas-mine Reddic two.
Meanwhile, Sweetwa-ter’s JV boys lost to Wylie, 44-36, in their District 5-3A opener as they fell to 13-7 overall. Trey Taylor scored a team-high 12 points for the Mustangs while Brandon Howell added nine points, Quentin Wetsel eight, Deandre Gatson three and Marquees Jenkins and Mike McCoy two. Sweet-water led 11-8 after one quarter and 22-21 at half-time, but trailed 32-30 after three quarters.
Sweetwater’s freshman boys (9-4) also lost their district opener as they fell to Wylie, 51-28.
Duanta Williams had 13 points to pace Sweetwater. Rhett Torres scored eight and J.P. Poe seven. Wylie led 11-7, 22-14 and 34-22 at the breaks.
