BROWNWOOD — Sweet-water held its own against Brownwood over the final two periods, but the Lions took a commanding 20-6 after one quarter and were never seriously threatened after that in claiming a 59-38 win Friday in District 5-3A boys basketball action.
The loss dropped Sweet-water’s records to 9-17 overall and 0-3 in district play. Brownwood is 7-17 overall, but now 2-0 in district play as the Lions pulled into a tie with Wylie —which was idle Friday — for the 5-3A lead.
Brownwood went on a 12-2 run over the final five minutes of the opening period to claim a double-digit advantage that it never relinquished. It was 36-16 at halftime and 48-27 going into the fourth quarter.
Sweetwater got double-figure scoring from both Kaleb Hoover, who scored 12 points, and Taylor Jones, who finished with 10. But Brownwood’s shooting from outside the perimeter — the Lions connected on eight 3-pointers, including five by Bryant McDaniel — was just too much for the Mustangs to overcome. Only Jones and Gabe Medellin, with one each, managed to hit treys for Sweetwater, which is back home Tuesday to face Snyder in a battle of the only winless teams in 5-3A.
Medellin and Dylon Ada-mes each scored five points and Dylan Bennett, Tino Martinez and Cole Maxwell had two for Sweetwater. Tuesday’s game will end the first half of District 5-3A play for the Mustangs.
