BROWNWOOD — The Sweetwater girls basketball team ended the first half of district play by losing to Brownwood’s No. 7-ranked Lady Lions, 71-33, at the Brownwood gym.
The loss dropped the Lady Mustangs to 14-15 overall and 0-4 in district, while Brownwood is 21-6 overall and 3-1 in District 5-3A.

Sweetwater still has to face both Brownwood and Wylie again, as well as a Big Spring team that has an 18-7 overall record and is 2-2 in district. Sweetwater begins the second half of district by hosting Snyder (1-3), which defeated the Lady Mustangs 56-47 in their 5-3A opener, on Tuesday.
Candice Hernandez led Sweetwater with 10 points in Friday’s game, which Brownwood led 21-7, 34-16 and 49-24 at the breaks and left many starters in while leading by as much as 42 in the fourth quarter. Also scoring for Sweetwater were Alicia Finn with six points, Kendra Crosson and Suede Shirley with five, Elise Law-rence with three and Kinsey Browning and Janell Walker with two points.
Sweetwater shot just 10 free throws to Brownwood’s 32 as the hosts built much of their margin at the line.
