More than 1.7 million Texans 18 years of age and older are living with diabetes. Although the disease can be deadly, it is easily managed through a healthier lifestyle. Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) is offering a free diabetic support group meeting on Feb. 7, at 6:30 p.m. at the hospital’s emergency department classroom, located at 200 E. Arizona Avenue.
The support group meeting will feature guest speaker Dr. Timothy Jones, a new family practice physician at RPMH. This event is free of charge and does not require any type of membership.
The program is ideal for those with or those looking to learn more about the disease. Support staff will be on-site to answer questions in the group or individually.
“Diabetes isn’t a death sentence, but it could be if not managed properly,” said Jones. “Diet and exercise are key to properly managing diabetes.”
Diabetes mellitus, typically referred to as diabetes, affects one in 10 adults in the United States. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), diabetes is one of the leading causes of death in the nation.
For more than 11 years, the RPMH has supported the Diabetic Outreach Program. A free service to the community, the program offers diabetic education, support groups, dietary consults, and a variety of resources that help affected individuals and their loved ones live with or prevent the disease.
“Diabetes is being diagnosed in more and more Americans each year,” Jones explained. “The RPMH Diabetic Outreach Program exists to increase awareness about the disease by offering free education and support to everyone in our community.”
