The Veterans Discovery Day was held at the Sweetwater TSTC (Texas State Technical College) campus on Friday, Jan. 27, 2012.
All military personnel — active duty, National Guard, reserve forces, separated, discharged or retired —- and their families were invited to the event. According to event coordinator Scott Davis, the Discovery Day held a two-fold purpose.
With a number of veteran agencies at the event, veterans were able to meet with the organizations face to face at their respective booths, rather than interaction via telephone or online. A variety of questions regarding military benefits, among others, could be answered at an instant.
Additionally, those veterans with benefits were encouraged to enroll for classes at TSTC that would prove to be of assistance to them. Tours of the campus were given during the day, and Davis also noted that spouses of deployed military personnel could also sign up for classes at the campus while their loved one is serving.
Around nine agencies were represented at the function, along with a few local employers such as Georgia Pacific, Ludlum Measurement and Buzzi Unicem.
The Veterans Discovery Day was sponsored by the Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development (SEED).
