Another big night by Sier-ra Allen led to good things for Highland’s basketball teams as they pulled off a doubleheader sweep on Friday against Westbrook.
Allen scored 33 points for Highland in a 53-45 win. The Lady Hornets, who are advancing to the playoffs for the 11th straight year, ended their regular season with a 22-7 record and 10-2 in District 11-A, Division II. Highland trails Roby (10-1) — which had its first loss Friday — by a half-game. Jessica McCain and Lora Stewart each had six points, Kara Hughey four and Madison Moseley and Megan Thompson two in the victory over Westbrook. Highland, which led 14-9, 27-19 and 41-30 at the breaks, plays again at 8 p.m. Friday when it has a playoff warmup game at Hermleigh against New Home.
Highland’s boys are 3-7 in District 11-A, Division II after defeating Westbrook 43-30. The Hornets, who are 6-19 overall, still have two games left. Ron Coving-ton led Highland with 19 points, and Ethan Wilson was also in double figures with 11 points. Also scoring points against Westbrook for Highland were Shelby Howard with eight, Kevin Box and Kaden Nachlinger with two and Sheldon Hall with one. Highland found itself trailing Westbrook after one period, 9-7, but it was tied 21-21 at halftime and Highland was ahead 29-26 after three periods before putting it away.
