ABILENE — Sweetwater stayed reasonably close to No. 22-ranked Wylie’s boys until late in the second quarter of the teams’ District 5-3A game Friday, but a huge 31-0 run that began at the point led to an 85-34 victory.
The Mustangs were trailing just 31-23 when Wylie’s Mike Lopez, who would score 28 points, hit two 3-pointers and a two-pointer to end the half.
Two of Lopez’s team-mates, Bryson Fowlkes and Patrick Walker, combined for six points and Lopez ran off eight more with two 3s thrown in again — his sixth and seventh three-pointers — to make it 53-23.
The run produced nine more points until Anthony Palacios ended it by making two free throws at the 1:48 mark of the third period.
Even though Lopez would not score any more points, his teammates would tack on 23 more as the Bulldogs increased their lead from 34 to 51 in the fourth quarter.
Wylie, which has clinched a playoff berth, improved to 6-0 in district and is 20-7 overall. Sweetwater fell to 1-5 in district (10-19 over-all) and will host Brown-wood (4-1), which holds second place after defeating Big Spring 51-46, when it returns to action Tuesday.
Kaleb Hoover was the only player to score in dou-ble digits for Sweetwater on Friday as he finished with 13 points, while Taylor Jones had seven.
But only three other Mustangs were able to score any points against Wylie. They were Dylan Bennett and Palacios with five points apiece, and Dylon Adames with four. Sweetwater made just nine field goals.
