Highland’s girls hoped to begin their 11th straight trip to the basketball playoffs with a win, but instead lost to Sterling City 44-36 in the teams’ bi-district contest on Monday.
By winning the Class 1A, Div. II playoff in Winters, Sterling City advances to the area round while High-land’s season ends with a 22-9 record.
Highland, the second-place team in District 11-A, Division II this season, won 20 or more games for the eighth time in 11 years.
The Lady Hornets started well, leading 10-8 after fin-ishing the opening quarter with a 5-1 run. However, Sterling City was up 18-17 at halftime and 29-24 after three periods en route to the victory. The Lady Eagles (23-9) will face Wink this weekend in the area playoffs. Sierra Allen led High-land with 14 points, but no other player hit double fig-ures as Kara Hughey scored nine points, Beth Richburg six, Kaylee Martin three and Lora Stewart and Madison Moseley two apiece.
SW boys, two other hoop teams end today
Three Nolan County high school boys basketball teams wrap up play today. In District 5-3A, Sweetwater (1-6) visits Snyder (0-7); in District 11-A, Division II, Highland (3-8) hosts Roby (8-3); and in District 12-A, Division II, Blackwell (1-12) hosts Bronte (9-4).
The Roscoe boys (1-9) ended their year Friday by losing to Munday, while The Sweetwater, Blackwell and Roscoe girls all completed play this past Tuesday.
