After beginning its 2012 softball season by winning three of four games at the Abilene Ice Breaker tournament last week, Sweetwat-er’s Lady Mustangs will be headed back that direction today for a single varsity game in Clyde at 4 p.m. In addition, the Sweetwater JV softball team is scheduled to play its season opener against Clyde’s JV today following the varsity contest.
The varsity teams met at Abilene, with Sweetwater winning 14-3 Thursday fol-lowing an 8-0 win against Anson to begin the tourna-ment earlier that day. The Lady Mustangs then faced Abilene Cooper after defea-ting Clyde and suffered their only loss, 4-2, in Thursday’s final game. But Sweetwater then defeated Albany, 8-4, in a morning game Friday. However, rainy weather in Abilene forced Sweetwater to cancel its last three tournament games scheduled for Friday and Saturday.
Maty Montgomery and Alicia Finn teamed for a pitching shutout in the win over Anson, allowing just one hit and striking out five. Claire Williams and Megan Holsey had two hits while Suede Shirley, Jackie Carey, Kelsi Crosson, Kendra Crosson and Jerren Villa also hit safely.
Williams collected a double and had two RBIs.
Against Clyde, Sweetwater was paced offensively by Shirley, who had three hits, and by Kendra Crosson and Keyli Turner, who had two hits apiece. Montgomery pitched a three-inning com-plete game for the win.
Sweetwater led 1-0 early until Cooper rallied with a three-run third inning. The Lady Mustangs trailed 4-1 against Cooper until scoring on Williams’ double. Montgomery and Finn pitched. Against Albany, Williams, Holsey, Kinsey Browning and Shirley had two hits; Shirley, Holsey, Turner and Williams doubled; and Williams, Holsey and Turner had two RBIs. Also getting RBIs were Jerren Villa and Shirley.
Finn pitched the first four innings and Montgomery finished up. They allowed seven hits and fanned two. Sweetwater will host its an-nual three-day tournament starting Thursday.
Meanwhile, the varsity and JV baseball teams go to San Angelo Lake View for season-opening games today at 4:30 p.m. The varsity game will be played at Lake View’s Chief Field and the JV game will be played at San Angelo’s Texas Bank Sports Complex.
Several Sweetwater baseball and golf athletes will be playing in tournaments later this week. The JV boys golf team will play at Lamesa’s one-day tournament Wednesday and the varsity boys go to Abilene for Wylie’s one-day event Friday. The varsity and JV girls golf teams host a two-day tournament at Sweet-water Country Club starting Friday.
