Sweetwater High School’s three-day softball tournament begins today at the Jerry Collins Complex with eight games on the schedule. However, the host team — off to an impressive 4-1 start after beating Clyde, 4-3, on Tuesday in Clyde — will get the day off before playing its first tournament game at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
It could be yet another Sweetwater-Clyde matchup, as the Lady Mustangs will play the winner of Friday’s 3:30 p.m. game between Anson and Clyde. Sweetwater and Clyde have already met twice this season, with the Lady Mustangs winning both times. However, Tuesday’s win was much harder than a 14-3 romp a few days earlier at Abilene’s Ice Breaker tournament. After squandering a 3-0 lead, Sweetwater won it in the seventh inning on Suede Shirley’s sacrifice fly that scored Jackie Carey from third base. Carey and Kelsi Crosson each finished with two hits, with Carey getting a triple and double, while Crosson also doubled.
Alicia Finn (double), Kendra Crosson, Kinsey Browning and Keyli Turner also hit safely. Claire Wil-liams, Kendra Crosson and Browning scored the other runs for Sweetwater, and Browning was outstanding defensively. On the mound, Maty Montgomery threw a complete seven-inning game to get the victory. She scattered seven hits, struck out two and walked two.
Sweetwater plays again Saturday, after facing either Anson or Clyde, at either 10:45 a.m. or 12:30 p.m.
Today’s schedule features Colorado City’s JV vs. Eula at 9 a.m., Hamlin vs. Roby at 10:45 a.m., Merkel vs. Hawley JV at 1:30 p.m. and Clyde JV vs. Perryton at 3:30 p.m., plus two winners’ bracket and two losers’ bracket games.
Friday’s schedule of games begins with Post vs. Hawley at 9 a.m., followed by Winters vs. Colorado City at 10:45 a.m.
