After a season-opening tie at San Angelo Lake View and splitting four games this past weekend at Lake View’s tournament, Sweetwater almost overcame two six-run deficits Tuesday against 5A San Angelo Central in the Mustangs’ home open-er. But the Bobcats held off a serious threat in the sixth inning, and held off another potential rally in the seventh for a 10-6 victory.
Sweetwater trailed 10-4 when Stephen May tripled with two outs to score Shawn Campbell and Cole Maxwell in the sixth inning and chase Central’s starting pitcher Jake Butler.
Dylan Bennett and Sean Morrow then drew consecutive walks to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate until Central reliever Kolton Cox got the final out on an outfield fly.
Campbell and Brandon Howell also drew one-out walks in the seventh until Cox retired the side.
Sweetwater never led, but tied Central 2-2 in the second inning. Morrow drew a walk, went to third on Greg Aiken’s hit and scored on Campbell’s squeeze bunt. Aiken moved to third on the play, and scored on a passed ball. But Central made it 8-2 after scoring six runs in the fourth that were all unearned because of two Sweetwater errors.
Sweetwater scored in the fourth and fifth to make it 8-4, but Central got both runs back in the sixth. Ryan Linebaugh had a leadoff single and scored on Gabriel Medellin’s sacrifice fly in the fourth, and James Clift cracked a leadoff double and scored on May’s grounder after beating a throw to the plate in the fifth. Both Clift and Morrow had two of the Mustangs’ nine hits.
Kaleb Hoover pitched the first 3 2/3 innings until Medellin came on to throw the last 3 1/3. Sweetwater begins play on Friday at its annual Wood Bat Classic.
