Three Sweetwater High School athletes — Sam Nemir, Ryan Linebaugh and Mateo Gonzales — will compete in the 2012 boys state powerlifting meet. This year’s meet will be March 24 in Abilene.
All three athletes qualified for state by placing among the top two lifters in their weight class at Friday’s Region I, Division 2 Class 3A meet held at Sundown.
It will be the second con-secutive state appearance for Nemir and Linebaugh, who placed first in their respective weight classes — the 181-pound class for Nemir and the 165-pound class for Linebaugh — at the regional meet. Both went to state last year in the 165-pound class and placed 10th and 11th, respectively.
Nemir — a state alternate in 2010 as a sophomore — lifted 1,305 pounds to win his weight class on Friday. His total included a 480-pound squat, 310-pound dead lift and 515-pound dead lift. Linebaugh, a jun-ior, won his class with a total lift of 1,155 pounds including a 450-pound squat, 250-pound bench press and 455-pound dead lift.
Gonzales, a senior, will be making his first state appearance after placing second in the 242-pound class. He lifted 1,470 pounds with a 550-pound squat, 350-pound bench press and 570-pound dead lift. Gon-zales was fifth in the 242-pound class at regionals a year ago.
Bray Amos, Donald Bak-er, Jay Lomas and Anthony Palacios all placed in the top five in their weight class at the regional meet. Baker (1,010) and Amos (925) were fourth in the 148- and 132-pound classes, respectively, while Palacios (1,150) was fifth in the 198-pound class and Lomas (795) placed fifth in the 123-pound class.
Alex Garcia (1,120) was seventh in the 198-pound class; Austin Marlett (930) was eighth in the 148-pound class; Kendall Rea (1,085) was ninth in the 220-pound class; Kyle Lambert (1,000) was 10th in the 198-pound class; and Johnathan Browning (755) was 10th in the 132-pound class.
Only Lubbock Cooper finished ahead of Sweetwater in the team standings, win-ning the title with 29 points while Sweetwater had 25. Levelland and Seminole (21 points) tied for third place.
Chase Saunders and Angel Caballero, both in the 275-pound class, were the other regional qualifiers for Sweetwater this year.
