Sweetwater High School’s varsity tennis team won a number of medals when it competed recently at a tournament in Levelland.
Chris Hernandez and Madison Meneses teamed to win first place in mixed doubles, while the girls doubles team of Addisyn Cleck-ler and Jenny Medellin took second place after advancing to the tournament finals.
The boys doubles team of Bryan Vause and Isaiah Hernandez was fourth and Stephen Shipp placed sixth in boys singles, while Teresa Perez-Poe and Kristen Casto were sixth and seventh, re-spectively, in girls singles.
The two-day tournament also had teams from Breckenridge, Brownfield, Levelland, Lubbock Cooper, Shallowater, Lubbock Trin-ity and SPCHEA.
Sweetwater will get a final tuneup for district when it plays at a tournament in Snyder this Friday.
Nemir, Hoover have top finishes at Graham meet
Sweetwater’s Nick Nemir and Kaleb Hoover each had a pair of top-three finishes at the Possum Kingdom Relays in Graham this past Saturday.
Nemir won the 300 hur-dles with a time of 41.66 seconds and was also second in the 100 dash (11.43), while Hoover was second in the high jump (5-10) and third in the 400 dash (55.08).
The varsity and JV boys will compete at Colorado City on Thursday in their final action prior to the District 5-3A track meet, which will be held April 11-12 at Wylie.
Two SHS girls place at B-Spring
Two girls athletes from Sweetwater High School had top-six finishes this past Friday at Big Spring’s Lady Steers Relays.
Alicia Finn was fourth in the discus (100-7). In addition, Finn placed sixth in the shot put (33-4) and Kendra Crosson was sixth in the triple jump (30-11 1/4).
Sweetwater has one more meet prior to district as it will compete at Colorado City on Saturday.
Former SW athlete is 8th in hurdles at UTEP Springtime meet
Ex-Sweetwater athlete Morgan Shelton was eighth overall in the women’s 100-meter hurdles at the UTEP Springtime meet that was held Saturday in El Paso.
Shelton, who recorded a time of 14.91 seconds, has automatically qualified for the Division II Outdoor National Championships in the heptathlon with a score that is first in the nation.
