SNYDER — After being held to no runs and just two hits through the first four innings, the Sweetwater softball team scored three runs in the fifth inning and held on for a 3-2 victory at Snyder to leave both teams in a tie for second place in District 5-3A at 2-2.
Megan Holsey began the decisive fifth-inning rally with a one-out single, and walks to Alicia Finn and Kinsey Browning loaded the bases. After a strikeout, both Holsey and Finn scored on a two-RBI single by Keyli Turner to give the Lady Mustangs a 2-1 lead. After her single, Turner moved to second on the throw to the plate and she scored on Claire Williams’ RBI single to make it 3-1. The only other Sweetwater hits were singles by Holsey and Browning in the third inning, but pitching and defense protected the lead.
With Sweetwater up 3-2 in the seventh, Turner and Browning teamed up to ice the win with a game-ending defensive play after Snyder’s Heather Medrano had reached base with a one-out single.
After Medrano’s hit, pitcher Maty Montgomery got her fourth strikeout of the game for the second out. Medrano then tried to steal second base. But Turner, Sweetwater’s catcher, threw to shortstop Browning who tagged Medrano out to end the game in thrilling fash-ion for the Lady Mustangs.
Montgomery got the pitching win for Sweetwa-ter, allowing just six hits and only one earned run. Snyder led 1-0 until the fifth after scoring on a bunt and three-base throwing error in the first inning. Sweetwater will travel to Big Spring (1-3) for its next game Tuesday.
