The Sweetwater High School boys and girls golf teams are still in second place in their respective district tournaments de-spite losing some ground on the leaders in the second round this week.
The Sweetwater girls — who were just one shot behind Snyder after firing a 356 in the first round — now trail Snyder by 33 strokes with 18 holes left. The top two teams will advance to the regional tournament in San Angelo on April 18-19, so Sweetwater must main-tain its position in order to advance.
The Sweetwater boys — who were just three shots behind Big Spring after a 317 in Round One — lead third-place Wylie by two shots and Snyder by three after two rounds. The Mustangs (644) carded a 324 at Sweetwater Coun-try Club on Tuesday and trail Big Spring (622) by 22 strokes.
Sweetwater’s girls, who have a 732 total, are 16 shots ahead of third-place Wylie. Both teams carded 376s on Monday but lost ground to Snyder (699), which shot 341.
Sweetwater’s best individual golfer after two rounds is Elise Lawrence who is currently tied for third place at 172 after shooting a 90 in Monday’s second round.
The other Sweetwater team scores come from Alex Gomez, who shot 94 for a 182 total, Amy Witt (95-185), Rachel Hunt (100-199) and Haylee Stewart (97-193).
Gomez currently sits in ninth place among medalists. The leader is Sabrina Castillo of Snyder, who has rounds of 81-84 for a 165 total.
Sweetwater’s No. 2 team is sixth with an 834 total following its second straight round of 417. The team’s golfers are Molly Fincher (95-189), Alexis Castillo (111-222), Sierra Hernandez (99-199) and Laney Wallace (112-224). The tournament ends April 9 at Brownwood.
Among boys individual golfers, Sweetwater is led by Alex Castillo (77-156), who is in fourth place. Also among the top 10 medalists are Ryan Mer-cer (80-159), who is in sixth place, and Mason Andrews, who is in 10th place after an 81-162.
Completing Sweetwa-ter’s No. 1 team scores are Dylan Torres (86-167) and Guy Bond, who shot 100-186.
The boys’ final round will be played on April 10 at Wylie.
